Trying to pull myself out of hiding only to be met by vampires….

Things have been rough in the Ferrell house- so I’ve been hiding (something I do too well). I have a love/hate relationship with isolation…. it’s my security blanket when things get sticky, and I fall into “recluse-mode” far too easily- but it makes me weird and jumpy and intolerant of society and the people around me. I get too hyper-focused with myself and others (because I have nothing else to focus on because of my removal from life’s distractions), and am all-around difficult to deal with. In my experience, life’s distractions are necessary. Ernest Becker (a cultural anthropologist and Thanatologist) theorized that we are all abundantly aware of our own mortality, and in order to cope with it we fill our lives with as many distractions as possible to convince ourselves we are immortal (I really love Becker… he was kindof super brilliant). I don’t think I’m trying to escape the awareness of my mortality (because as far as my consciousness is concerned, I’ve very ok with it)… but who knows what’s really going on in our subconscious. All I know is that if I don’t have tedious distractions and social outlets- I get creepy. So as part of my multi-faceted plan to ward off the creepies, I’m going to write on here at least 3 or 4 times a week. So you’ll be hearing alot from me in the future (and if you don’t, you’ll know that I’ve failed my plan).
So onto distractions…..
Sully got in his first fist-fight at school. 1 week into the school year, and he’s duking it out in the boy’s locker-room. He has always been picked on and bullied by kids because he’s different and brainy and doesn’t give a shit about “fitting in” and is socially awkward. These elements will serve him well in highschool and college when individuality becomes something to strive for… but in elementary school and junior high- they are bully magnets. Apparently, he started an argument with another kid, and then the other kid decided to throw the first punch- and Sully kicked his ass so bad the other kid was crying. I have very mixed feelings about this. My “June Cleaver Parental Side” is frustrated that he started the argument, and also that he didn’t take the necessary steps to diffuse the situation or walk away because violence is no way to argue. BUT then there’s the other side… the primal Mama Lion side that jumps up and screams “FUCK YEAH!!! GIVE THAT LITTLE BRAT WHAT HE DESERVES FOR THROWING THE FIRST PUNCH!!!”. Immature- I know. But after watching Sully come home in tears for years after being picked on, and having to “suck it up” and tolerate the intolerance and cruelty of other kids… a part of me LOOOOOVED that he beat this kid down, and in turn showed all the other boys in the locker room that he is not a child to be fucked with. He fought back when threatened- and he won. Now, the responsible June Cleaver side of me gave him the appropriate lecture, and we went over all the ways that he could avoid fights in the future- but in my head, I was smiling. And when he and the other boy met with the principal, and the other boy almost got the police called on him because during this altercation he threatened to bring a gun to school and shoot Sully (idle childish threat- but one that school systems have ZERO tolerance for), and Sully walked away from the situation without any punishment… again, in my head, I was smiling. I’m trying to keep those smiles hidden because I don’t want to give Sully the wrong message… but they’re so very there.
On another note… will someone PLEASE explain to me why vampires have such a stronghold on our society right now? I went into Borders the other day, and there is an entire literature section dedicated to vampire stories. Suspense novels, romance novels, and even a “Young Adult” section where vampire stories have become the new “Sweet Valley High”. It’s creeping me the fuck out, and I don’t understand it. Granted, I’ve never read the Twilight books (nor do I have any desire to do so), and I won’t even go near the “True Blood” tv show (which Brad secretly watches downloaded episodes on his iPod- but admits that it’s total shit, but addicting… kindof like fast food in the way that it temporarily satisfies, but has no nutritional value and fills you with guilt and bloat after ingesting). The only worthwhile vampire story that I’ve seen since I was a kid and watched (and LOVED) “The Lost Boys” was this Swedish(?) film Brad turned me onto called “Let the Right One In”… and it is actually the sweetest love story ever that just happens to be “Vampire motivated”. But aside from that, I would really really like for all this vampire stuff to go away for a while. It’s just gotten out of control, and feels like 14 year old goth kids have taken over our media.
On that note, I’m off to make Sully do his homework, and work in the yard. But I’ll leave you with a photo from my recent trip to Las Vegas for a trade show selling sunglasses for my day job (and if you’re curious as to where I work, you can see it at www.isunscape.com). My lovely friend Jen came as my sales assistant, and we found the most beautiful restaurant in Caesar’s Palace where the walls are all aquariums. Beautiful….

FUCK YEAH! way to go Sully. i wish i had the balls like him to beat the shit outta my bully in middle school. ugh…. that’s totally rad! and fuck that little fucker… threatening to bring a gun??? what a fucking pussy ass brat.
dude- “interview with the vampire” is pretty sweet too. but yeah, this twilight nonsense?? it is getting a way bit too creepy….
Pertaining to Sully…. my thoughts exactly!!! BUT, as a “responsible parent”, I have to let him know that there is structured social behavior, and in order to live in a peaceful society we have to exist within that structure. And throwing punches isn’t the road to conflict resolution. (But when I told his dad and Brad about it, they both were proud that Sully didn’t let himself be pushed around).
Bur with the vampires- I TOTALLY recommend “Let the Right One In”. It’s so fucking awesome… and if anyone were to get too into vampires, it should be through movies like this. Not through vampires that sparkle.
yes, i know if i were in your shoes i would have giving him the “responsible parent” talking to as well… but like you said, you’re smiling inside and that’s what counts!!
he’s done mama proud! but sshhhh! hehe.
hahahaha, sparkling vampires…. so goofy. i’ll definitely check out ‘let the right one in’.
Oh, Kristen. I wish I could just give you a big hug. I miss you. Kisses and more kisses are flying to Cali for you. I love you!
~Sara.
I love you too, Sara!!!
I miss you.
You and your little lady should come out and visit me. She’d love the beach, and Sully would love her (he’s actually AMAZING with little kids).
Think about it.
xoxoxoxoxo
Thank you for the comments about our Vampire society. I’m in complete agreement with you and it kind of makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
I’m all for life distractions Becker-style, but when an entire culture gets bombarded with a single idea, and that single idea infects every aspect of that culture, and if that single thing is Vampires…. it gets super annoying.
It’s kindof like when X-files was on TV, and everyone under the sun was obsessed with aliens, and Roswell, and you couldn’t escape it if you tried.
I can also understand it if it was a teenager-obsession thing… but these are grown adults. Obsessed with vampires. (I understand the contradiction in stating this because I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and wizards are silly. BUT Harry Potter didn’t take itself seriously, and it wasn’t written for adults, and it wasn’t “adult themed”- or in the case of “True Blood”, made only for adults. CREEPY!!!!).
I love True Blood – but yeah it’s definately popcorn.
I’ve got no aversion to popcorn. I love my mindless filler as much as the next guy (you should see my DVD box set collection… it’s quite hilarious)…. but there’s just too much vampire going on right now. If it had hit the airwaves before the Twilight mania got started, then it wouldn’t rub me the wrong way (and I probably would have no opinion of it what-so-ever).
But right now… enough with the damn vampires!!!!
Ethan’s still subbing at that Catholic school in Topeka and the nuns are saying the young adult vampire lit is promoting celibacy among teens. He has to read them eventually (and I probably will too) because it gets young ladies interested in reading. But yeah, it’s overwhelming…
And about Sully, I miss him and am smiling for him too! I’m so glad you’re a mom, because you are a terrific one!
Sully misses you too!!!!
The celibate vampire thing is odd to me. Aren’t they supposed to be vixens? I don’t understand anything anymore.
But I would love to see Ethan reading these books, and trying to wrap that brilliant brain around the silliness.
Give yourself and Ethan the biggest hug for me!!!!
XOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Do you ever just get on your knees and thank whoever that you have a kid like Sully? I admit fighting isn’t the best way to go (i have bad memories of getting punches thrown) but it’s a hell of a lot better than threatening to shoot them (something that has also be said to me. So yay for Sully
As for vampire love, I will admit that I enjoy the Twilight books, saw the movie, discussed with friends, etc. But the whole mania is getting really goddamn annoying. All the ripoffs especially. No I take that back. Have you ever come in contact with a Twi-Hard? They are some of the most annoying people you will ever meet. No exaggeration. After reading the book, they will say something like “OMG Edward is SOOOO hot! I want a man just like him! No one will EVER come close!!! (insert text speak here)
No lies, wish I was kidding. I like the books and movie, but I hate those kids. I wanna scream at them to come back to reality. The worst however, was after seeing Twilight twice (one time with friends, another on my birthday) my friend declared at Starbucks that she now believes in vampires. Seriously. I can’t make this shit up. The moral of the story is do everything you possibly can to never ever come in contact with these freaks. Your sanity will thank you.
Has nothing to do with vamps, but how are your kitties? I saw that picture of Leo eating the duck and it reminded me of my cat trying to drag around my shoes. I love dogs, but I forgot how hilarious cats are.
xoxo
I had a particularly rough day with Sully today… so this is not the day that I get down on my knees and thank anyone. But usually, yes- I’m proud of my awesome kid.
One of my good friends is a crazy twilight fan… but we don’t talk in depth about it because she knows I’m really not interested (just like I won’t bombard her with talking about old Star Trek episodes). But the stories of your friends who declare themselves vampires or whatever is WEIRD!!! I’m a big Potter fan… but I’ve never wanted to be a wizard. Just like I’m a total Trekkie… but I’ve never dressed up in a Star Trek uniform or tried to learn Klingon (and for all you out there who aren’t aware of this… there is a Klingon language, and people do learn and speak it. UUUUGGGHHHH!!!!).
ANY severe breaks in reality give me the willies. But the vampire one has taken our nation by storm. And it’s weird.
And the kitties are fine. Lila has gotten over her illness after eating all those plastic flowers, Daisy is in heat and being hilarious around all our fixed boy cats (she gets soooo frustrated!!), and the boys are all fine. Leo is looking a little shabby- but he’s older than dirt, so it’s to be expected.
That picture is awesome..
Congrats (in the most socially responsible adult way possible) to Sully! My daughter is 8 but she sounds kinda similar to him in that she gets picked on for being too smart for her age and would rather read or talk to teachers than play princess.. I know sooner or later it’ll probably escalate, but i think she’ll be ok since she can already knock the ever lovin snot out of her teenage cousins when needed..
As for Twilight.. Never read it, never saw the movies, no desire to do either one. At least it’s making people read books again and making fishnets easier to find. I do love making fun of fangtards so it entertains me to see teenagers in my neighborhood go from cheerleader types to glittery vamps in a day. It’s cute, let them eat cake
Ya know, you’re right. At least people are reading again. It was becoming a lost passtime… so I’ll take literacy, even if it comes in the form of creepiness.
Good point, lady. Thank you!!
I must admit that I’m a big fan of True Blood, not only because it’s entertaining but also because it touches upon the big problems of American society. For example, the main “evil” characters in True blood are crazy fundamentalist Christians. and the show speaks about intolerance – vampires are society’s “minorities” that face blatant prejudice (and have problems integrating into society). also, I like the fact that none of the True blood characters are 100% good and 100% evil… unlike characters in many other popcorn movies. Of course, that doesn’t mean that True blood isn’t popcorn… but at least you should give it a try, me thinks XD
as for Twilight… Twilight is vile!! my husband said that Twilight is actually a ripoff of the Sookie Stackhouse novels (which were the “basis” of the True blood tv show… although the show is WAY better than the books). That Mormon woman who wrote Twilight just took the True blood story and made it suitable for 12 year old girls. Sparkly vampires who don’t drink blood, no pre-marital sex… WTF!! just another machine to pump money out of kids and their parents…
as for other vampire movies, I would like to recommend the gorgeous Korean movie “Thirst”! It was made by Park Chan-Wook, the director of Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. It’s about a priest who became a vampire.
sorry for my broken English… I’m not a native speaker.
Your “broken English” is better than most American’s regular English… so you shouldn’t apologize, but be very very proud!!
And as far as the Mormon infiltration of the vampire scene with the Twilight books- this is the first time I’ve heard of it (though that’s not shocking because I’m out of the loop with so many, many things). How can a vampire not drink blood? And why do they sparkle?… wait, don’t tell me… I don’t want to know.
But I’ll have to check out that movie! Thanks for the recommendation!!
i totally agree with you on both counts….True Blood actually does have some substance!
i *love* the series, and i don’t think i’ve followed any TV show at all since Max Headroom in the 80s, or the Beetlejuice cartoons. and i literally had to be forced into watching my first episode, since i am so anti-tv!
i think dumb goth kids just ruined the whole “liking vampire stuff” thing for everyone else. my husband likes to tease me about liking True Blood & Anne Rice, while totally ignoring the 4000000 other books i have (or have read) that feature OTHER fantastical creatures such as witches, mummies, unicorns, robots, extra-terrestrials & alien life forms, dragons, elves, elder gods, demons, ghosts, monsters, shambling mounds, etc etc. i read sci fi, fantasy, and horror fiction almost exclusively, some of which is about vampires, much of which is not. it’d be much more on target to tease me about the Tolkien mania i’ve had since grade school and the entire shelf i have dedicated to books by & about him.
twilight, however, sounds awful and not in a “so-awful-it’s-good” way. the more i read or hear about it the worse it sounds, so i am steering way clear of it. and yes the writer *is* some weird crazy mormon chick.
and my recommendation for a good vampire movie is “the little vampire”. it’s a kid’s film but it is really, really cute and enjoyable for adult’s too.
have you ever heard of the Bahooka restaraunt? it’s decorated like a weird tropical pirate ship and has aquariums all over the walls too. not as high class as Ceaser’s, but fun none the less. http://www.geocities.com/bahookarestaurant/welcome.htm
don’t ask me how the food is though, it’s been years since i went and i was not too coherent after one too many “bahooka bowls”
omg, That last pic is so cute (and awesome). I really love chubby goldfish with whispy tails.
Thanks for sharing.
The restaurant where the fish were is in Caesar’s Palace…. so if you’re ever in Vegas- check it out. Walls and walls of these chubby goldfish… plus they’ve got this super crazy ornate ceiling… the whole place is beautiful.
I hate Vegas… so if I say that there’s something awesome there… then you KNOW it’s true!
